WMU holds off EMU for win

Western Michigan 84, Eastern Michigan 80

Eastern Michigan lost its eighth consecutive game to Western Michigan on Saturday.

The game was back and forth, with the lead changing 18 times.

Western freshman guard David Kool had a career-high 26 points – however, it was his 12 points in the game’s final 2:08 that made the biggest impact. Kool made four-for-five from behind the three-point line in the win.

Eastern sophomore guard Carlos Medlock had a team-high 21 points.

Kent State 62, Bowling Green 61

Kent State was outrebounded and committed more turnovers, but still held on for a win against Bowling Green on Saturday.

Bowling Green senior Martin Samarco’s 26 points was not enough to lead a comeback.

Kent State senior guard Armon Gates tied the game at 50 with a three-pointer. He made his fourth three-pointer with 3:52 remaining to give the Golden Flashes a commanding seven-point lead. Bowling Green made a desperation three-pointer to put it within one point as time expired.

Miami University 72, Ohio 69 (OT)

Senior guard Doug Penno hit two three-pointers in overtime to lift Miami past Ohio on Sunday. He scored 12 points in the win.

Despite the loss, every Ohio starter scored in double digits, including center Leon Williams and sophomore forward Jerome Tillman. Ohio made just two field goals in overtime.

Akron 66, Buffalo 59

Sophomore forward Nate Linhart made his only three-pointer just 1:42 into the game. It gave Akron a 3-2 lead it would not surrender.

A pair of early second-half layups by Buffalo tied the game at 26, but that was as close as it would get.

Buffalo shot 90 percent from the free throw line, but was held to just 33 percent shooting from the field.

Toledo 76, Northern Illinois 60

Sophomore guard Jonathon Amos scored seven unanswered points midway through the second half to give Toledo a commanding 21-point lead.

Northern Illinois finished with more than twice as many turnovers as the Rockets, committing 33 compared to Toledo’s 16.

The Rockets extended their Mid-American Conference record to 5-0 and hold a two-game lead over the rest of the West Division.
