Club hockey splits pair of games
The club hockey team rebounded from a loss Saturday to earn a series split with Missouri on Sunday at the Isabella County Events Arena.
Central’s Rob Brunmeier scored three times in the second period to help the team earn a 7-2 win.
“We had a slow first period,” Brunmeier said. “But, they couldn’t stop us in the second.”
Brunmeier’s outburst was a trio of six total goals scored by CMU in the second period.
Central scored its first goal by way of power play goal with 18 seconds remaining in the first period to tie the score at one.
However, that was as close as it would get.
Neither team scored in the third period.
Player coach Alex Weisenburger said the team’s split was a combination of offense and defense.
“We had good team defense all day,” Weisenburger said.
Central allowed three goals in three minutes during the second period of its 5-4 loss on Saturday.
CMU took a one-goal lead in the first period before Missouri rallied to win.
“We underestimated them,” said senior Drew Ballard. “They tested our mental toughness.”
Missouri scored two more goals in the third period to take a 5-1 lead.
Central attempted to come back when it scored a short-handed goal with 8:02 remaining. However, it was not enough.
“We only played eight and a half minutes out there,” Weisenburger said. “The other 51 and a half was theirs.”
