Buying bachelors

Rockford sophomore and Phi Mu member Stephanie Eidson went to Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s date auction in support of charity.

“It’s a really good cause,” Eidson said about the philanthropy efforts.

Social fraternity SAE hosted a date auction Tuesday in the Charles V. Park Library Auditorium as part of its annual SnoFest fundraiser. The event raised money for the Children’s Miracle Network, a hospital network that treats more than 17 million children in the United States and Canada.

The fraternity raised more than $1,300 after auctioning away SAE members. Members were bought for bids ranging from $15 to $100.

Winning bidders were rewarded with a date and a pancake dinner Tuesday night at the International House of Pancakes, 5245 E. Pickard St. Proceeds from the dinner also will go toward the fundraiser.

“It’s great to see the support,” said Kyle Washer, SAE member and Farmington Hills senior. “It’s a nice feeling (being the top auctionee).”

Washer was sold for a date at $100.

The auditorium was filled with women willing to bid on 31 men. Some came for bidding while others just came to watch the charity event.

“I knew I wanted to support the philanthropy,” said Monica Krystyniak, a Livonia senior and Alpha Chi Omega member. “(SAE) supports us, and we support them.”

Audience members came to help out others in buying a date.

“I gave money to other people to bid (on the auctionees),” said Karleigh Simon, a Petosky junior and Alpha Gamma Delta member.

In addition to dates being auctioned, the fraternity also auctioned Children’s Miracle Network sweatshirts and teddy bears.

SAE member and Troy junior William Lawrence said he did not think he would bring in a lot of money, but he was bought for $80 and was one of the top auctionees of the night.

“I was a great value, like a package deal,” Lawrence said.

In addition to the date auction, SAE will continue selling wristbands for $1 to support the Children’s Miracle Network. They can be purchased at the SAE table next to the Down Under Food Court in the Bovee University Center.

SAE also will host a bowling fundraiser on Feb. 24 at the Student Activity Center.
