Harper Woods freshman Alex Curcuru loved to tell jokes.
“He was a fun kid with a great smile,” said Alex’s father, Andy Curcuru. “And he loved people – everybody.”
Curcuru, 18, and two friends died shortly after the car they were driving ran into a tree at 11:50 p.m. March 2.
Curcuru and four other people, including at least one other CMU student, Harper Woods junior Frank Pietrangelo, were driving from one party to another when they lost traction on a patch of ice while speeding down a Harper Woods residential street, said Harper Woods freshman Danielle Hubler.
Andy Curcuru said his son came to CMU because a lot of his friends attended.
“Because he was friends with everybody, you know, I would go to someone’s house or an apartment, or a dorm – he was always there because he was friends with somebody,” Hubler said.
Andy Curcuru said his son loved baseball. Alex played throughout his high school career, but he put sports aside when he came to college to focus on his academics, his father said.
Curcuru wanted to become an entrepreneur and open his own sports bar after he finished college, said friend and Grosse Pointe Woods freshman Leia Spagnuolo.
“He was a jokester,” Alex’s father said. “I just miss the hell out of him. I just loved him.”
Ice was one of the factors in the accident, but the incident still is under investigation, said Harper Woods Deputy Police Chief Jim Burke. He said so far no one has been charged with any wrongdoing and more details will be released within a week or two.
One person died at the scene, while Curcuru and another man died at the hospital shortly after. The driver and one other unidentified passenger went to the hospital with serious injuries, Burke said.
Harrison Township senior Megan Achs, Pietrangelo’s girlfriend, said Pietrangelo currently is being treated for traumatic brain injury and is receiving physical, occupational and speech therapy at Saint John’s Hospital in Detroit.
Hubler said a candlelight ceremony took place the evening after the accident near the tree where the accident occurred.
She said the families of all three boys attended, as well as friends and neighbors.
Alex is survived by his mother and father, Andy and Donna Curcuru, and brother Ryan.
Notes of condolence can be sent to The Family of Alex Curcuru at 19901 Woodside Street, Harper Woods, MI 48225.
