Washington Internship Program informational meeting on Wednesday

Joshua Yates from the Washington Internship Program will visit CMU on Wednesday to educate students on their program.

Yates, who will visit campus from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Bovee University Center Chippewa room, travels to a number of college campuses to inform students of the Washington Internship Program.

“WIC looks for all majors and minors who are very unique from other programs that usually focus on two or three majors,” Yates said. “WIC looks at the particular skills and interests that provide many transferable skills for your career.”

Amber Earman, Yates’ coordinator, said Yates will show a 15-minute DVD of alumnae who used the program.

“Yates will then go into the application process, and list personal interests and career goals, so we can match you up with the right program to get connected with the right companies,” she said.

According the program’s Web site, washingtoninternship.com, classes are attended at Georgetown University and throughout the District of Columbia.

Once a week, a class will be taught during the duration of the internship by founder and director Linda Bayer, who served as a former speech writer for former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Interns also will experience many different guest speakers and take a few field trips. WIC has many connections with FOX News and political science networks, to name a few, Earman said.

“Although most internships won’t be paid, housing for the interns is available,” Yates said. “WIC understands that most interns will be traveling out of state and out of their comfort zone.”
