Senior creates day for school colors

Greg Angel created Maroon and Gold Day for one purpose.

To show CMU pride.

“Especially over this past semester, I’ve seen more students wearing apparel promoting other academic institutions, including Western Michigan,” the Canton senior said. “Granted, these are good schools, but it makes me ask, ‘Where is our school spirit?’”

Maroon and Gold Day will take place Wednesday, the last full day of classes before finals. To participate, students simply wear maroon and gold apparel.

The event is open to everyone, including students, professors and staff. Campus dining staff will also participate by wearing maroon and gold.

Angel has relied on word of mouth and Facebook.com to publicize the event.

Farmington Hills freshman Joe Albrecht was one of the first to say he would participate when he saw the event on Facebook.

“I was thrilled to see something like this happening on our campus,” Albrecht said. “This day will help bring out a ton of Chippewa pride in everyone and blanket the campus in maroon and gold. It’s a great way to show how unified our campus truly can be.”

Traverse City senior JJ Warren currently is in West Palm Beach, Fla., but said she still will participate by wearing her school colors, despite her location.

“I think that is a great way to show my school pride and all the people I work with here are hard-core Gator fans,” Warren said. “I want to be able to show off my Chippewa pride.”

Besides showing off their school spirit, students boasting maroon and gold can register to win a $50 gift certificate to the CMU Bookstore.

Angel said this event also will bring the student body together.

“With topics such as diversity being so popular, everyone wants to divide us and show how we’re all different,” he said.
