Safer Sex Patrol member Michelle Smith said residents of Beddow Hall should feel comfortable taking safe sex kits.
“You don’t have to feel awkward, just take the condoms,” the Quincy junior said.
The organization went around to residence halls Thursday night handing out safer sex kits and discussing safe sex with students. The group handed out more than 400 packs of condoms, candy and information about sexually transmitted diseases.
Linsey Grove, Safer Sex Patrol coordinator and a Montgomery junior, said this is the second semester the group handed out kits to residence hall residents.
“It’s a very condensed area,” Grove said. “It’s a great place to hand out the kits.”
Grove assembled more than 20 volunteers at the Bovee University Center and assigned them to different areas of campus.
“It’s not been as popular,” Grove said. “We have increased our numbers over the last semester.”
Smith said guys were more willing to accept the kits.
“The girls were less receptive,” she said.
Some volunteers became members their first night out with the group.
Frankenmuth sophomore Julianne Haney said she saw the group online and decided to check it out.
“I was looking at the Volunteer Center site and it looked like fun,” she said.
Natalie Davis, a Beddow Hall multicultural adviser and Taylor junior, said the group should focus on the education aspect, not just handing out free condoms.
