Music and poetry for Darfur

Darrell Parham recited his own poetry to help others across the globe.

The Saginaw junior volunteered his time and talent on Friday at the Darfur Benefit Concert, a fundraiser for the people of Sudan.

“I was trying to paint a picture for the people, for them to see what is going on,” Parham said. “This means a lot to me because I had immediate family who traveled as missionaries and aid workers to Juba, Sudan.”

Darfur, located in the western region of Sudan, has been war-torn for more than five years. In this time, more than 400,000 people died and 2.5 million were left homeless.

Now considered one of the largest and most complex humanitarian issues of our time, crisis in Darfur has left 3.5 million people relying on world aid.

“Severity of the genocide isn’t given proper attention or media coverage,” said Laura Khalil, Livonia freshman. “It is important for people all over to know what is happening in places like Darfur so other countries, organizations and individuals can contribute and fight against the issue.”

The benefit concert, which took place in the Bovee University Center, was sponsored by the Student Government Association’s diversity committee. It was put together to raise money and awareness.

Detroit senior Shaney Lawson and Sparta sophomore Jessy Rollston co-organized the benefit concert.

“Our main goal was just to raise money. As part of the diversity committee, we decided to help the people of Darfur,” Rollston said. “I was disappointed in the small turnout, but it was fun and entertaining, and all for a wonderful cause.”

The concert was a talent show with entertainment ranging from a performance by CMU’s Dance Team to a reenactment of Elvis Presley.

Dancing to Cornie Baile Ray’s “Like a Star,” Detroit sophomore Anthony Buyck enjoys giving back to others. Buyck started his own dance company in Battle Creek to provide free classes for underprivileged children.

“Here in America, we have so much compared to those living in Darfur,” he said. “I just feel obligated to be a part of giving.”
