Team loses two in playoffs

Momentum proved to be going against the women’s club lacrosse team this weekend in Toledo.

Central Michigan lost 16-5 to eventual national champion Michigan in its opening game and 15-6 to Ohio State in the consolation round in the Division A playoffs of the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse League.

“We felt very prepared heading into the playoffs,” said injured junior center Becky Gates when asked about the Michigan game. “It just all happened so quickly.”

Central was down 8-0 in the first half, which resulted in a switch to zone defense.

“The momentum was really on their side,” Gates said. “We really didn’t have possession of the ball until like five minutes into the game.”

After switching to a zone defense, Michigan outscored CMU only 8-5 for the rest of the game, including 3-2 in the second half.

In CMU’s second game, it faced another opponent it lost to in the regular season in Ohio State. And although momentum started with Central, it quickly went to Ohio State.

“We came out and were ahead 2-0,” said junior defensive wing Audrey Carrasco. “Then the tides turned and they showed up and started taking over.”

Fatigue may have played a factor because after its game against Michigan, the team had to play Ohio State. Ohio State had time inbetween its first game loss against Miami University and its game against Central.

Central finishes the season 10-6 in its first year in Division A. Five of the six losses came against teams making Division A playoffs, with the final regular season loss coming against Oakland, which made Division B playoffs.
