Hospice seeking community involvement

The words “By the Community, for the Community” will be written across the cornerstone of the new Hospice house.

Hospice of Central Michigan is welcoming the community to tour the new facility from 3 to 5 p.m. June 1. This will be the first chance to see the new fully furnished and completed Hospice of Central Michigan and Morey Bereavement Center, 2597 S. Meridian Road.

“The community can celebrate Capital Campaign, (a) completed project and get a good look at what the community was able to build,” said Deanna Heath, executive director of Hospice for Central Michigan.

Christine Peters, development director of Hospice of Central Michigan, said this is an important event for the community.

“They’re the ones that built it,” Peters said. “They are the ones who donated the money.”

In 2006, the Caring Hands Lifting Hearts Capital Campaign was started to raise $3.2 million for the specific purpose of building the new house; $2.2 million was for construction and $1 million was for operation.

As of Tuesday $3.18 million had been raised and the hospice still needs $20,000, Heath said. Gifts still are coming every day, but Hospice officials are trying to get the word out to complete their goal.

Mandy Rodriguez, administrative coordinator for Hospice, said that during the housewarming, the community can see exactly where their dollars have gone and see how excellent the facility is going to be. Hospice is also looking for assistance in furnishing the new house. It has registered at Target, Wal-Mart, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Sears, Scripture Palace in Alma and Cook Christian Supplies in Mount Pleasant.

The items needed range anywhere from sheets, towels and bedding to pots, pans and other kitchen appliances.

Donations or items can be dropped off at Hospice’s current office, 401 S. Main St.
