Mount Pleasant Police arrested two men Tuesday after receiving approximately 20 malicious destruction of property complaints at several commercial buildings, school buildings, homes and vehicles.
Charles Merrill, 17, of Mount Pleasant, is charged with two counts of breaking and entering and five counts of malicious destruction of a building. Thomas Mower, 20, of Mount Pleasant, is charged with five counts of malicious destruction of a building.
MPPD have Tuesday morning video surveillance footage of a suspect breaking into Mountain Town Station Brewing Company & Steakhouse, 506 W. Broadway St.
Windows also were busted out and graffiti were spray-painted on the outside of Kinney Elementary School, 720 N. Kinney Ave. Vandals also broke into the Borden Building, 320 W. Broadway St., early Tuesday, leaving site workers with a mess of papers to clean up.
“I anticipate that we will be receiving additional investigative reports from the Mount Pleasant Police Department over the next few days, and that additional charges may be filed,” said Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick.
It is unknown if the two suspects worked together, Burdick said.
“They are charged with damaging the same building,” he said.
The two counts of breaking and entering are 10-year felonies, and the five counts of malicious destruction are 5-year felonies.
It is unknown whether either of the two suspects are CMU students. The pair is scheduled to be arraigned today.
In the surveillance tape, the suspect used a rock to break through a glass window at 5:35 a.m. before entering the brewery, said Jim Holton, owner of Mountain Town.
After attempting to walk out with several bottles of “high-end” Bourbon and Scotch whiskey, the suspect dropped the bottles and fell into a brewing vessel, draining all of its alcohol, Holton said.
“He made a hell of a mess,” he said. “We don’t feel anything was stolen because he was such an idiot.”
After repairing the windows at noon Tuesday and replacing the alcohol bottles, Holton said the break-in put his business out thousands of dollars.
“We had to clean up all day,” Holton said.
