Room and board rate increases 6 percent

Central Michigan University Board of Trustees approved a 6 percent increase in 2008-09 room and board rates on Thursday.

New incoming students will pay $7,668, up from $7,236, for a standard room with unlimited meal plan.

Students covered under the CMU Promise will not pay the increase, including returning juniors and seniors.

The Board of Trustees also discussed the potential of a Central Michigan University medical school and raised ProfEd tuition rates.

Apartment rates also will increase by 3 percent.

University President Michael Rao said administration and consultants are still discussing the medical school, but could admit the first freshman class in either the 2011 or 2012 school year.

The ProfEd distance learning tuition rates will increase by 5.2 percent for undergraduate programs and 5.5 percent for graduate programs.
