Mascot game set for Saturday

Sports mascots from around the country will square off against each other this Saturday for a charity basketball game.

The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Rose Arena.

The competition will feature 16 to 20 sports mascots playing seven-minute quarters.

Mascots participating include Rowdy from CMU, Sparty from Michigan State University, Lou E. Iron from Great Lakes Loons, the SBX Bear and Chester Cheetah.

Proceeds will benefit the American Lung Association and also will include a sports memorabilia raffle, including autographed jerseys.

Howard City graduate student Josh Merryman helped organize the event and said he’s looking forward to it.

“It will be a fun time for the entire family,” Merryman said. “It’ll be very family-orientated.”

This will be the first time CMU hosts the event, and Merryman said he’s hoping for a good turnout.

“If we get a good turnout, we might do it in the future,” he said. “We’ve put up ads and fliers so hopefully there will be a good turnout.”

Merryman also stressed the importance of the cause.

Assistant Marketing Director Mike Dabbs is looking forward to the event.

“It’ll be fun for the whole family as well as the youth,” Dabbs said. “This is an absolutely unique and different event. I’m also looking forward to seeing mascots from all over the country, especially Rowdy.”
