Assignment deadlines are already accumulating for students.
The deadline for the first tuition payment of the year is just another date to add to the list. Students have until 5 p.m. Sept. 5 to pay tuition for the fall semester.
“There is a $100 late fee and a $30 service fee if the payment isn’t made on time,” said Diane Fleming, associate director for client services in the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid.
Payments can be made online through the CMU Portal. By selecting “Finances” and “Online billing and payment/view my account,” students are able to make a direct deposit and pay their debt on the CMU bill.
“A lot of students use e-checks or credit cards to pay,” said Cynthia Rubingh, receivable accounting director.
OSFA suggests direct deposit as students’ method of payment instead of checks and credit cards.
“The money comes right out of the students’ bank, so they don’t have to worry about changing their local address when they move,” Fleming said. “And there is a guarantee that the money will be there.”
Students who are taking credits off campus will also be able to pay with direct deposit.
“If the student is going overseas, student teaching or on an internship, this is the way to make sure the money gets to his or her account quickly,” according to the OSFA Web site, financialaid.cmich.edu.
Students can set up direct deposit through the CMU Portal by selecting “Finances” and clicking on “Refund Payment Option,” according to the Web site.
Hastings Junior Aliscia Leo said she does not pay much attention to the tuition deadline.
“My scholarship comes in, I get a letter about my loans kicking in and then I get a letter about whether or not I have a refund,” Leo said.
Current freshmen will pay an in-state tuition of $324 per credit hour, while out-of-state tuition will cost $753 per credit hour, Fleming said.
The CMU Promise, a tuition guarantee that kept static the cost of credits for five years, was made to students from fall 2005 through this summer. It ended for incoming students this fall.
Students paying through the CMU Promise have different tuition bills depending on which year they first enrolled.
