One brother pleads guilty; other gets new charge

One of the two Detroit brothers facing felony and misdemeanor charges involving an Oct. 3 assault is scheduled for arraignment on another non-related felony charge.

Freshman George Darnell Jackson, 18, is charged with first-degree home invasion for an Oct. 24 incident in Celani Hall.

George Jackson was already facing felony charges of unarmed robbery and larceny, and a misdemeanor charge of breaking and entering a motor vehicle to steal property less than $200.

George Jackson is scheduled for a jury trial at 9 a.m. Jan. 6, and a scheduling conference arraignment 9 a.m. Friday.

His brother, sophomore Darren Anthony Jackson II, pleaded guilty Wednesday to four felony charges and a misdemeanor, pending youthful trainee status for his involvement in the Oct. 3 incidents.

Isabella County Prosecuting Attorney Larry Burdick said the youthful trainee status is for 17 through 20-year-old offenders who do not want to have a criminal record.

“(The status) essentially allows him to be put on probation for up to three years, and the court can order whatever condition of probation it wants, including that the person spends a certain amount of time in jail,” Burdick said.

If the probation is completed successfully, the court will dismiss the charges, Burdick said.

Darren Jackson pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor of breaking and entering, and to felony charges of unarmed robbery, larceny, interfering with an electronic communication device and assaulting/resisting/obstructing an officer.

The brothers were arrested Oct. 3 at Copper Beech Townhomes, 4750 E. Bluegrass Road, for breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and other charges relating to that incident.

A press release from the Mount Pleasant Police Department stated that during a subsequent investigation the brothers were identified as two suspects in an assault earlier that day.

The victim in that assault, 20-year-old Clinton Township sophomore Thomas Pacholke, was assaulted at about 1:48 a.m. at the intersection of Sweeney Street and Abbey Lane, according to the MPPD.

His cell phone and wallet were taken by one of the men and Pacholke then began calling police, but one suspect allegedly assaulted him again and took the phone, said MPPD Sgt. Dan Gaffka in an October interview with Central Michigan Life.

George Jackson had a plea hearing Wednesday for the Oct. 3 incidents and according to court documents “appeared but indicated the matter was going to continue to trial at this point.”

Court documents said the court accepted Darren Jackson’s guilty pleas “under advisement youthful training status,” meaning he can withdraw his pleas if he is not granted youthful training status.

He is scheduled for sentencing 9:45 a.m. Dec. 19.
