Printmaking display starts today in Charles V. Park Library

Students looking to indulge themselves in some new art will be given the chance during the next few weeks.

Charlotte senior Evan Breithart and Hancock senior Sarah Pelto will be displaying exhibiting their artwork in the Charles V. Park Library Extended Study Hours Room. Both students’ artwork consists of the style called printmaking.

Breithart, whose artwork will be displayed Dec. 2 until Jan. 8, will be displaying art made using woodcut techniques.

“They are geometric and colorful,” Breithart said. “Everything is based on mathematical formulas.”

Pelto spent a great deal of time preparing for the exhibit, she said.

“This entire semester was dedicated to the exhibit,” Pelto said. “Everything I created this fall was designed for the exhibit.”

Exhibition Coordinator Megan Moreno helped make it possible for Pelto and Breithart to display their art.

“I just try to let students know when there is exhibition space is available,” Moreno said, “In this case I let Sarah (Pelto) know that there was room. It’s more collaboration than anything.”

Both students were given free reign in designing their exhibit. Pelto’s exhibition, which will be displayed Tuesday, Dec. 2 through Dec. 12, and is titled “Mother and Her Nature”

“All of my art work is based off of nature,” Pelto said.

Breithart, while not having an official title for his part of the exhibition, also had an inspiration common across his displayed work.

“I guess mathematics and music is where I get inspiration,” Breithart said. “Bridget Riley (an English painter) is another inspiration for my art.”

Though each piece’s creation time varied, a great deal of time and effort was put forth, Breithart said.

“The biggest part for me is planning it,” he said. “I usually spend a couple of weeks just planning a piece.”

Pelto put a comparable amount of time toward the art in her exhibition.

“Sometimes I can make a print within two days if I’m really excited about it,” Pelto said. “But usually they take a lot more time and thought.”

Moreno said students should visit the exhibit.

“I’m excited about it,” Moreno said. “I have not seen any of the work for the exhibit yet, so I can’t wait for it to open.”
