WMU women win; Ohio falls to Fordham

Western Michigan 54, Iona 44

Tasha McDowell celebrated her first win as the head coach of the WMU’s women’s basketball team on Sunday against Iona 54-44 at the Iona Thanksgiving Classic Tournament.

Freshman Miame Giden led the Broncos with 16 points and seven rebounds. Senior Tiera DeLaHoussye added 12 points, seven assists and four steals. Both of the players were named to the All-Iona Thanksgiving Classic Team, averaging more than 13 points in both games.

WMU (1-4) struggled on offense, but was able to keep the score tied at 21 at halftime. Iona was not consistent in the first half either, only making 37.5 percent of its field goals, compared to WMU’s 30 percent.

Western improved its field goal percentage to 40 percent in the second half, which sparked a 9-0 run and eventually resulted in a 12-point lead with 10:07 remaining, WMU’s biggest lead of the game.

The Broncos forced 26 turnovers and outrebounded Iona, 43-34. Jenny Loney contributed nine of those rebounds, a career high. Loney, the 6-foot-1 forward, also put forth seven crucial points in the second half.

The tournament was a part of WMU’s seven-day, three-game road trip. The Broncos do not return home until Dec.14 when they host Chicago State.

Fordham 55, Ohio 51

Kamille Buckner scored a career high of 16 points on Saturday night, but it was not enough in Fordham’s 55-51 escape against Ohio in the Cancun Thanksgiving Shootout.

The Bobcats erased a 16-point halftime deficit and held Fordham to a seven-minute scoring drought.

Ohio went on a 19-4 run and even took a one-point lead with 3:21 remaining, but Jenny Poff’s 3-pointer and a pair of Randall Hurst’s free throws gave Fordham the lead and the win.

Hurst finished the night with the game high of 18 points. Annie Zoph added 11.

Along with going 6-of-7 from the field and scoring the first eight points for the Bobcats, Buckner had the game high of eight rebounds. She was named a member of the All-Tournament Team.

Ohio will continue its nonconference road trip when it heads to South Carolina to face Presbyterian College at 7 p.m. Thursday.
