Classes canceled, some of campus remains open during MLK holiday
Martin Luther King Jr. Day became an official holiday in 1986, to pay homage to the late civil rights leader.
King’s birthday is traditionally celebrated on Monday in the third week of January.
CMU is paying respects in another form by canceling university courses, with the exception of some offices that will remain open on campus despite MLK Jr. day being national holiday.
One reason why campus offices are open is to assist students.
For students who need to study, the library is open to their benefit, said Tom Moore, dean of libraries.
“The library is a learning resource and as much as possible we want to maintain access, and we want to provide the service,” he said.
Moore also said that in addition to the library being open, there are events and programs celebrating Dr. King.
“The library is sponsoring two films, and one is on Monday,” Moore said. “So we need to be open so people can have access to the auditorium,” he said.
For Ithaca junior Kristyn Pitcher, keeping offices closed is something that should be required.
“I think offices should be closed because it is a Federal holiday, and everybody should have that have the day off. I think all Federal holidays should be treated the same,” she said.
One of the many offices that will be open Monday is the School of Accounting. A representative of this school said that the decision to keep the University open has always been the same.
“I don’t understand it, the university does not shut down and I guess it is the school’s choice to do that,” the representative said.
In regards to CMU’s regulations for other Federal holidays, the representative said not all Federal holidays are handled the same.
Classes and offices will resume regular hours on Tuesday.
