Bob Saget bringing raunchy act to Rose in April
Comedian and sitcom star Bob Saget is headed to Central Michigan University to perform his R-rated stand-up routine at Rose Arena.
The performance is scheduled for April 18, according to bobsaget.com and the Program Board’s Web site, but the date may change.
“We’ve been trying to get Bob Saget for a couple years now,” said Crysta Heckman, Program Board comedy chair and Pinconning junior. “This was the first year that we had the amount of money that we needed.”
Saget is best known for is role as father-figure Danny Tanner on the popular late ’80s-early ’90s sitcom “Full House” and his eight-year stint as host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”
Matt Burza, Program Board president and Otsego senior, said the organization plans to schedule an opening act, though none have been confirmed yet.
“Bob likes to keep his thumb on his openers,” he said. “He really likes to work with people he’s familiar with, so that’s something we’ve had to work with his agent on, but we’re narrowing it down pretty soon.”
The Program Board would not release the cost of bringing Saget to campus because of “contractual agreements.”
Saget performs at many colleges and universities throughout the country and has a special draw for college students, Burza said.
“Everybody that’s in college now-a-days grew up watching ‘Full House,’” Burza said. “As people mature from being an innocent kid to an independent adult in college, they tend to become kind of vulgar and they realize that Bob Saget is that way, too.”
Oxford junior Kaitlin Denton grew up watching “Full House” and was surprised to hear that Saget’s stand-up routine was such a departure from his previous work.
“If I hadn’t heard that he was so vulgar, I would expect his stand-up to be more family kind of humor, or his corny jokes from ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos,’” she said.
Saget is not the first “Full House” cast member to show up at CMU. In September 2006, Jodie Sweetin, who starred as Stephanie, talked about her addiction to both methamphetamine and alcohol to a crowd of 1,600 in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium.
Ticket sales start March 16, and will range in price from $8 to $25. Even though the best seats will be pricier, they are still roughly 60 percent less than the normal price for Saget’s shows, Heckman said.
The first 200 people to purchase tickets will be entered into a raffle to win admission for two people to a meet-and-greet session with Saget.
The performance is scheduled to take place in Rose Arena, the largest on-campus venue with a seating capacity of more than 5,000 people.
“We’re targeting not only CMU, but also the Mount Pleasant community and other colleges in the state,” Heckman said.
