Snocross, rail jams at casino
Gamblers and guests will not be the only folks populating the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort grounds this weekend.
Instead, the resort will be occupied by athletes and fans on Saturday and Sunday, cheering the Freeze X Fest winter sport events.
“We’re really trying to offer something for everyone,” said Corey Bixby, marketing director for Baja MX Inc., a company involved in promoting the event.
The festival boasts two days of activities. There will be Snocross, which is snowmobile racing on ice-covered tracks, a Snowboard Rail Jam competition on a course designed for snowboard tricks and an American Motorcyclist Association-sponsored ice race.
The AMA Ice Race Grand Championship offers the winner of the race a grand prize of $10,000 and the Rail Jam competition will offer the winner a $1,000 grand prize.
Patrick Grzebinski, an event promoter with Baja MX, said the event will offer those competing a chance to get their name out there and get some recognition they deserve.
“We have an opportunity to get extreme sports on a national level,” he said. “To get support for Michigan athletes and just have a good time.”
Cost for the event varies depending on age and whether or not spectators want a one- or two-day pass. Prices range from $8 to $25 and tickets can be purchased at the Soaring Eagle Box Office at the casino, 6800 Soaring Eagle Blvd.
The event also will carry more than 25 vendors associated with Freeze X Fest. Spectators will have a chance to visit a Yamaha-sponsored demo area, where test rides of 2009 Yamaha snowmobiles on a huge snow course will take place, as well as a public snow luge sponsored by Great Lakes Powersports.
Clay sophomore Charles Alongi, is excited about the event bringing so many people to the area and is looking forward to seeing what vendors have to offer.
“I love Snocross, I am a big fan of snowmobiles because that’s what we do back home,” he said. “And there doing cool stuff with snowboards, so I am really excited.”
