Annual magazine, ‘The Sacrifice,’ highlights diversity, minority students
There is one publication at Central Michigan University that’s only published only once a year, but its message resonates each of those 365 days.
The Sacrifice, a 500 circulation magazine which started publishing two years ago, focuses on celebrating diversity and giving a voice to minority student issues.
“Even though it focuses on multicultural issues and diversity, we really want people to know that it is for everyone – to educate and entertain everyone – not just certain groups,” said Detroit junior Carly Wilson, editor-in-chief.
“Anyone can write for us and anyone can pick up a copy,” she said.
The magazine regularly features a Registered Student Organization or student who is doing exceptional things, as well as poetry, diversity issues on campus, features on international students, and self-help sections on topics such as health, beauty and studying.
Vice President and Detroit junior TaNisha Parker said her favorite part about working for The Sacrifice is working with other students who are passionate about giving minority students an outlet.
“The Greek life section is my favorite, because minority Greeks don’t get as much representation and they don’t have much of a voice on campus,” she said.
Wilson said the name “Sacrifice” represents the sacrifices parents and ancestors have made for many minority students. The name also represents the hard work and time that goes into making the magazine.
“We sacrifice our time to make (the magazine) because we love to do it,” Wilson said. “You make sacrifices for the things you love.”
Wilson’s goals for the magazine are to find continuous funding so the magazine can be published twice a year and to set up a Web site.
The next issue of The Sacrifice will be published in April. Copies will be available in the Volunteer Center, Minority Student Services and the Multicultural Education Center.
