Job hunting jitters: Business fraternity kicks off speaker week today
Courtney Schrader believes that finding a job after graduation is not so much about what you know, but who you know.
“Making professional connections and having many skills are useful in today’s world,” said Schrader, coordinator of Phi Chi Theta’s annual Speaker Week.
The co-ed professional business fraternity will have several presentations throughout the week for students.
From 6 to 7 p.m. today in Grawn Hall room 100, the fraternity will host “What Your MySpace Page Says About You.”
This event will feature Ricardo Resio, director of human resources at the Saginaw-based financial service company Rehmann LLC., on how to use social networks for finding a job.
“Social networks are sometimes used for screening purposes, but most of the time will not be the main source of the hiring process,” said Summer Wejroch, president of Phi Chi Theta.
On Tuesday, “Creating Competitive Advantages through the Brand called YOU,” takes place at 5 p.m. in the Applied Business Studies Complex Pierpont Auditorium.
Isha Cogborn, global communication and brand manager at The Dow Chemical Company, will be the featured speaker. He will speak on how students can craft their image and learn how to get a start in today’s economy.
“This is a good chance for underclassmen to get information outside of the classroom on the hiring process and what to expect,” Wejroch said.
On Wednesday, “Bubbles, Financial Markets, and the Student Job Market” will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. in Grawn Hall room 100.
The main focus of the event is to show students how to get a job in today’s market and how to purchase houses, Schrader said.
“The job market is worse than before, but with the right credentials you will be able to find something.” Schrader said.
Patrick Corcoran, director of the College of Business Administration real estate major, is the scheduled speaker of this event.
Speaker Week 2009 will conclude with a speech by Melany Roy, recruiter for Art Van Furniture.
She will cover how to catch mistakes on a resume and show the proper way to write one. Also included in this event will be a list of questions that people may expect an interviewer to ask when going through the process.
This event will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the ABSC’s Pierpont Auditorium.
