Bowling benefits battered soldiers

When soldiers are on the front line, they need to be ready to strike.

This weekend, people will bowl for a strike in a fundraiser for those soldiers.

“Strikes for Soldiers” will raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps returning soldiers of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts through emotional and physical support.

“I truly believe that this event is so great because it does show support of our troops here and overseas, and really benefits those that have been injured in the line of fire,” said Quincy senior Jackie Giggy, who has several family members in the armed services.

The organization’s “claim to fame” are its WWP packs, which the organization delivers to the beds of wounded soldiers. The backpacks contain basic personal items and toiletries for soldiers that may have entered the hospital with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.

“Our donation goal is to raise a minimum of $500,” said Giggy, who is part of a group that is organizing the fundraiser for their RPL 430: Planning Recreational Programs and Events course.

Bowing will be at Riverwood Golf Club and Resort, 1313 East Broomfield Road, from noon to 4 p.m.

Originally Giggy’s group had been trying to decide which charity to sponsor when her mother suggested the idea of sponsoring Wounded Warrior Project.

“After thinking it over for not even a day, my group decided this was going to be our charity of choice,” Giggy said.

Registration for the event is $8 per team in advance and $10 per team at the door and can be purchased in advance in Finch Fieldhouse Room 109.

Prizes at the event include a floral arrangement and gift cards and certificates to local restaurants, such as Pizza Hut, Ponderosa, Crankers, Culvers and others. The prizes will be awarded to the most strikes in a game and the top three individual scores.

“I truly hope that people show up because they really do want to support our troops,” Giggy said.
