Irish-themed climbing wall party to benefit alternative breaks trip

St. Patrick’s Day may be over, but some students still have Ireland on their mind.

Twelve students are taking a week out of their summer to reach out to the youth in northern Ireland as a part of the Alternative Breaks program.

“We will be working with an organization who work with the youth to teach them conflict resolution and peace building,” said Commerce Township senior Jessica Esker who is co-leading the Ireland trip. “But we won’t know all the information for another couple weeks.”

The students will also be working on some construction projects while over there.

This trip is completely student run and student-funded. This Friday, there will be a fundraiser to help and support the students on the trip.

It will be at the rock climbing wall in Finch Fieldhouse. Admission is $5 and includes gear.

“It’ll be a lot of fun. We’ll all be there and we’ll have fun Irish music,” Esker said.

This trip will be Owosso junior Brian Hudecek’s fourth alternative break trip, but it will be his first time going to Ireland.

“I’m excited. I like being dedicated to service. I like giving up a part of my break in order to serve,” Hudecek said.

This year, alternative breaks has sent out more than 400 students both throughout the United States and abroad.

They also take weekends to go out and focus on locals issues throughout the year. There are two site leaders for every group sent out and there are three other trips going to volunteer this summer.
