Digital demonstration touches on new media advertising

A group of media professionals from Detroit filled the Bovee University Center on Tuesday night to discuss the future of digital media with students.

Students from Central Michigan University, Ferris State University and Northwood University attended.

The forum was mediated by Beth Mach, the president of the 313 Digital. Mach said bringing new ideas to campuses helps spread the word about digital technologies and job markets.

“I was brought on to bring the team a little further,” Mach said. “Being here today is taking us one step further.”

Mach’s diverse career led her from hairdressing to working with Lifetime Television before landing her in digital media.

Eight different panelists participated in the forum, with experience in fields ranging from cars to sports.

The importance of interviewing and resumes were covered by many of the panelists.

“Make your resume stand out,” said Krissy Payne, who works at YouTube and Google. “Put something on there that will make you stand out from the pile.”

Students who excel in digital media should think about making a digital portfolio in addition to their regular portfolio, panelists said.

Other discussion topics included the future of digital media, problems and solutions with the field, and panelists’ favorite Web sites and applications.

Aubrey Hohisel, an FSU senior, attended the event with the university’s advertising club.

“Digital media is the future of advertising,” Hohisel said. “I came to learn more about it.”
