Pride Week highlights include comedian, Day of Silence

Students celebrating Pride Week will have a packed calendar next week.

Pride Week takes place Monday through Friday and includes a comedy act, movies and a drag show.

Shannon Joliff, the director of Gay and Lesbian Programs, said the purpose of Pride Week is to celebrate the work of the gay community and individuals who have contributed to it.

Joliff said Dana Goldberg’s performance on Monday, and the Day of Silence on Wednesday, are going to be some of the week’s highlights.

The Day of Silence is Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is a national movement where participants do not speak to bring attention to the silence the LGBT community faces.

“It will be a time where people can reflect on why the community has stayed silent and why it’s important now to have our voices heard,” Joliff said.

The Day of Silence will be followed by a Silent March at 4:30 p.m. in front of the Charles V. Park Library.

Holt junior Matthew Darling, co-president of the Gay Straight Alliance, said his favorite part of Pride Week is the drag show.

Darling said that there is a lot of excitement and crowd involvement during Pride Week.

“It’s special because you see a lot of members of the community, and you get to see how far we’ve come,” Darling said.
