Unsuccessful burglar attempts break in at Doozies
One of Mount Pleasant’s well-known ice cream stands was the subject of an attempted burglary last week.
About $50 worth of damage was done to the doorknob and lock mechanism of the back door at Doozies Ice Cream Place, 1310 E. Pickard St., according to Detective Sgt. Bill Bluemer of the Mount Pleasant Police Department.
Bluemer said the incident happened sometime Wednesday night or Thursday morning after the damaged doorknob was discovered by a milk delivery worker who reporter the crime.
The door remained locked, preventing the suspect from entering and potentially stealing any items, he said.
Bluemer said the police have no suspects, as there were no reported witnesses to the crime.
Doozies owner Clyde Dosenberry said the suspect tried entering the parlor by bending the protective plate securing the door lock mechanism.
Dosenberry said he was surprised a burglar attempted to enter his store, but this is not the first time such an incident occurred.
“I’ve had it happen a couple of times,” he said. “People have tried to break the window to get in.”
Dosenberry said there isn’t much for a burglar to steal after he locks his store up at night.
“I don’t leave any money in here except for maybe ten dollars in ones,” he said. “Just ice cream.”
Burglary is a felony and carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison if convicted. Attempted burglary also carries felony charges.
