Mount Pleasant residents who want to get rid of junk need look no further than their curb this weekend.

A citywide program called “Trade Your Treasures” allows residents to exchange unwanted items with other community members by placing them at the curb.

“This is great for the community,” said Mount Pleasant Code Enforcement Administrative Staff Julie Courtney. “People who use this program love it, it’s a way to get rid of unwanted items without any cost to the participant.”

Registration is not necessary, and anyone is allowed to take items from the curb.

Courtney said the program, which begins Saturday, has been running steadily although for at least eight years, although there was a decrease in July. She is hopeful numbers will increase this weekend.

“Usually the community gets fliers through their curbside recycling,” said Tammy Bow, administrative staff for the Mount Pleasant Division of Public Works. “If you don’t have curbside recycling, information is listed through the Web site or random advertisements for the program.”

Items up for grab can be posted on the Web site, mt-pleasant.org, and on Channel 26 to get advertised.

Courtney said there are usually up to 80 items reported, but not all participants list their items.

The items must weigh less than 50 pounds, and can include scrap metal, bikes, toys, bookcases and fish tanks.

There is also a large item pick up available next Friday. Residents must sign up beforehand and pay $10 for each item that does not contain Freon and $35 for each item containing Freon. Residents cannot leave out include pianos, hot tubs, tires or clothes.

“Believe me, it’s happened,” Bow said.
