Five people were transported to Central Michigan Community Hospital after a car accident Wednesday evening on Mount Pleasant’s west side.

Officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department and the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department were called to investigate the scene of the accident, which was near the intersection of Broadway and Adams Streets, just west of the city’s downtown district.

MPPD Officer Don Sytsema said it appeared one car–a black Ford–had been rear-ended at a very high speed by a larger SUV.

“The vehicle was stopped at a stop sign, and a car came up behind it and hit it,” he said.

The car that was rear-ended was launched far forward and wound up on the grass in front of a house. The speeding SUV eventually crashed itself into a house after initially attempting to flee the scene of the accident, police said.

Employees from Consumers Energy and Charter Communications also arrived to repair a utility pole that had been struck by the launched car, causing a neighborhood blackout.

A large number of local residents watched outside of the taped area for a large portion of the evening, as officers investigated the scene, which stretched several blocks north and south on Adams Street, all the way down to Lyons Street.

There were four females in the car that was hit, and one male in the other. The seriousness of their injuries have not yet been determined.

It is still unknown whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

Police were still investigating the situation late Wednesday night and plan to release further information at a later time.
