With less than ten seconds remaining in today’s CMU-Michigan State football game, Spartan Stadium went silent.

Senior kicker Andrew Aguila kicked the game-winning  42-yard field goal to put CMU ahead 29-27, leaving three seconds on the clock for a long return.

The Chippewas recovered the ensuing kickoff after a squib-kick hit the back of a Spartan player on the front line of the return team as time expired.

“Every man to a man believed we were going to win the football game,” said coach Butch Jones.

CMU scored a touchdown with 32 seconds remaining to seemingly tie the game, but Jones decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Senior quarterback Dan LeFevour’s pass led senior wide receiver Antonio Brown out of bounds, and the attempt was no good.

However, the onside kick attempt bounced in the hands of senior wide receiver Bryan Anderson with 28 seconds remaining. Anderson was the closest player to the sideline.

The Chippewas moved the ball from the MSU 41-yard line to the MSU 25-yard line, where Aguila made the kick.

“(Aguila made) two extremely pressure-type field kicks on the onside kick (and the field goal),” Jones said.

CMU outgained the Spartans in total yardage 418 to 316. LeFevour, who threw for 108 yards against Arizona last Saturday, completed 33-of-46 passes for 328 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

LeFevour surpassed 12,000 total yards today, and he passed Byron Leftwich for first place on the Mid-American Conference’s career total offense yardage list. He now has 12,166 total career yards.

MSU lost its first non-conference home game since Sept. 14, 2002, against California.

CMU beat MSU in on Sept. 12, 1992, 17 years to this day.

Arguably the greatest win in CMU history. I’m sunburned, hoarse and my heart is STILL pounding in my chest, but it’s the most wonderful feeling I’ve had in a long, long time. I’ve never been more proud to be a Chippewa.

    Awesome game Chippewas!

As a student in the 80′s I always told my Spartan friends the Chips could compete with State if ever State would schedule the games. How does 3-4 in the series sound!

Don’t let up, beat Alcorn State and then run the MAC…this could be an awesome year for the seniors. What a program builder this win was. Congratulations to Coach Jones who has picked up where Brian K. left off…good things are happening to the Central program.

Awesome game. So many times I had to hang my head low walking from that place. It’s a good day.

Still speechless. The game and the atmosphere were electric. It was also wonderful to see the CMU team show enough class to circle around the Spartan S at mid-field, without making fools of themselves in celebratory stomping, etc. People may have thought this was disrepectful, I myself, thought it was very tasteful unlike the same MSU team who “cemented” their flag in the middle of Notre Dame stadium a few years back. Well done Butch. You have a hell of a group of guys. Each and every one of you deserve this vitory. Fantastic for the school, fantastic for the program.

Proud to be a Chippewa today.

Chips played much better than our Spartans on Saturday. LeFevour is a very good QB.

Sad Day for the Spartans, great day for the Chips and they might crack the top 30 in the nation this week.

As bad as the Spartans played, the Chips played much much better.

Congrats CMU.. see you in 2011 and 2012 in Shorts stadium.

    good game.
