The Do’s and Don’ts of Tailgate

DO

Grill Out – Why not get some food why enjoying the atmosphere, only bring small grills.

Wear your Central garb – Show your pride for CMU.

Enjoy your weekend – Football season means more than just a Saturday afternoon, make it more.

Go the game – Just because you’re having a good time tailgating doesn’t mean you should forget about the reason everyone is there.

Have a good time with friends – Nothing can be better than cheering CMU on with a group of friends.

Get Parking Permits early – If you don’t have these, you aren’t getting in.

Designate – If you have drank a little bit too much, don’t risk it, ask or call a friend.

Be aware – If things are getting out of control, don’t get involved.

Toss your garbage – There will be extra bins to get rid of trash.

Bring a football – What’s better than tossing around the pigskin on a Saturday afternoon?

Don’t

Bring glass – It’s not allowed anymore.

Get belligerent – It’s a good way to quickly get either kicked out, arrested or both.

Bring Pets – They aren’t allowed anymore and don’t take the risk of injuring an animal in the sometimes chaotic realm of tailgating.

Recklessly consume – It’s best to show up to the game sober.

Argue with the police – They aren’t going to respect you more.

Bring external stereos – These aren’t allowed anymore either.

Forget to stop by the CM Life tent – There will be free stuff and contest for fans.

no outside stereos?? what does that have to do with tailgating safety? i think that is part of the atmosphere that makes tailgates so great, so why prohibit them?

I hope a teacher or a cop wrote this, because I honestly don’t know anybody that shows up to the CMU game sober or wants to follow these new ridiculous tailgate rules.

  • Glenn

Yeah, the rules are so ridiculous–oh no, I cannot become drunk and belligerent and possible make a fool of myself and, even worse, possible hurt someone else or have an alcohol-related health scare. Really takes the fun out of going to a football game if you actually, you know, go to the game.

It’s almost as if the rules are asking you have responsible fun–what party poopers.

If you do not know anybody that can go to social or sporting events without being completely trashed and, by proxy, possibly *not* remembering what happened, I think that says more about your character than necessarily about “ridiculous” rules.

Glenn makes a very good point; sarcastic, but spot-on.

Listen, people, it IS possible to party responsibly. Halt the presses, right?

I am only speculating, but CMU might be willing to evaluate the new tailgating rules…if we give them good reason to do so. Let’s be smart about this. They are only going to reconsider the rules that we can truly argue to be ‘unnecessary’ or extreme. We need to be respectful and responsible with our complaints. We can’t complain that they are preventing us from getting wasted and belligerent. Seriously, what kind of argument is that? Think about it, where could that argument even go…what would the solution be? By representing intelligent arguments, CMU might actually listen what we have to say. Here is my suggestion…it’s just a start and you can take it or leave it.

    1. State your objection/problem. Ex: We prefer to use our own radios over having a band for musical entertainment.
    2. Give a good argument for your objection/problem. Ex: A. Not everyone shares the same taste in music. B. The entire tailgate area cannot hear the band.
    3. Suggest a reasonable solution. Ex: Set reasonable volume limits and kindly enforce them. If a group is being extremely loud, ask them to lower the music.

My point is that if we are reasonable, we might be heard.

The Ultimatum of the Student Tailgate Protest League to the administration.
-We refuse to participate in the September 26th Akron game’s tailgate in Lot 63(and every game thereafter) until (1) the 6-beer limit rule is lifted and (2) ban on external sound system is gone!!!!!!
In no-way do we want to hurt the CMU game-day culture, this is only an effort to preserve it. We want this protest to be strong and swift, in-order to bring people back to the stadium for as many home games as possible. Our numbers will grow from each tailgate failure that passes, as word spreads around campus, at parties and during every “Main Street” tailgating celebration. We believe these rules in particular are targeting those that make CMU game day so great, and this is our response.

Members of the Student Tailgate Protest believe
    1. In supporting the boycott of CMU lot 63 tailgate (except if you have protest signs).
    2. Contributing to the Game-day atmosphere at Main Street.
    3. Supporting Chippewa football by celebrating, watching on TV, listening and attending the games.
    4. The removal some of the excessive new tailgate regulations.

We all want to start tailgating at Kelly/Shorts as soon as possible, but it’s up to the administration to make that happen. Don’t let CMU football suffer until then!

Ken Robertson: I agree the external music rule needs to be changed. I feel it changes the atmosphere and doesn’t fulfill what the majority wants for musical entertainment. I bet CMU will reconsider it if we can present it reasonably…we need to explain why we think changing it 1) will not be a safety issue and 2) will satisfy the majority.

What is the problem with the 6 beer/1 pint rule? How does that hinder a good tailgate party? I don’t see the problem, but I would like to hear specific reasons from everyone why this rule is such a problem AND why they think changing it is in our best interest?

I don’t even know where to begin. I plan on attending Homecoming and after seeing the pictures of the tailgate from last Saturday, I don’t even know if I want to go anymore. I was disgusted at how pitiful the tailgate, and game attendance (under 19,000), looked. IT WAS THE HOME OPENER OF A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! These new rules are killing the Gameday atmosphere that I happily experienced at my time at Central. BEACAUSE OF THESE OVER THE TOP RULES GAMEDAY AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN FOOTBALL HAS TURNED INTO FRIDAY NIGHT AT MOUNT PLEASANT HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. This is NOT high school, this is COLLEGE. Give these kids a genuine college experience before they have to enter the not-so-great reality of the real world. FROM THIS DAY ON I WILL NO LONGER ATTEND ANYMORE CMU GAMES OF ANY KIND AND I WILL NO LONGER GIVE ANYMORE DONATIONS TO THE UNIVERSITY UNTIL THESE NEW RULES ARE LIFTED. I ENCOURAGE ALL ALUMNI WHO BELIEVE IN THIS TO DO THE SAME. IF THE UNIVERSITY WILL NOT LISTEN TO THE STUDENTS, THEY WILL DEFINITELY LISTEN TO THE SOUND OF SILENCE AT THE FOOTBALL GAMES.

TO THE STUDENTS: I encourage ALL students at CMU to protest these rules. Not going to tailgate/games is not enough. MAKE SIGNS, MAKE T-SHIRTS, YELL, UNITE, PASS OUT FLYERS, SHOW CHIPPEWA PRIDE, BE LOUD, BE HEARD! MAKE THIS THE BIGGEST, LOUDEST, MOST RECOGNIZED PEACEFUL PROTEST CMU HAS EVER SEEN. GO, FIRE UP CHIPS!!!
