Men’s club rugby improves to 3-0
The men’s club rugby team defeated Saginaw Valley by a score of 60-0 Friday in Mount Pleasant.
Despite managing six points on two kicks by Drew Lepine, the Exiles were able to pick up the scoring when Senior Tim Kane scored his first of three try’s on the night.
“Today was just one of those days,” he said. “You get the ball, lower your shoulder and go through. One of those days you take control early.”
Central went on to hold SVSU scoreless in the half, finishing the first half with a Try by Drew Lepine. Lepine completed six of seven kicks, as well as going 2-for-2 on drop goals.
Similar to that of American football, a conversion is kicked following a try and is worth two points, and drop goals can be kicked at anytime during play and are worth three points.
Central won 3-of-3 line-outs on the night. A line-out is similar to an in-bounds play in basketball, where any team can win possession of the ball.
With two quick scores by Kane, the Exiles opened up a 34-0 lead on SVSU.
“We started off a little rusty, but the second half we came out really strong,” said team president Jonathan Pace.
Junior Dan Stoffer got in on the scoring, adding his first try of the season. The Exiles added three more scores.
The focus now turns to league rival Ferris State, in the battle for the ‘Golden Keg’. The traditional battle has been lopsided the last six years in the Bulldogs’ favor, however, the Exiles claimed the ‘keg’ last season with a home victory against the bulldogs.
The Exiles are now 3-0, with other victories against Western Michigan and the University of Michigan.
