Just for clarification, the Chaplains are there for religious and moral support, as well as for counseling. There are Christian Chaplains, Jewish Chaplains, Buddhist, etc. It is not enforced that everyone see the Chaplain; he or she is just an optional form of morale. Chaplains are not authorized to carry weapons so the Chaplain Assistant works as a type of bodyguard. My husband does this in the Army and it does not mean that he necessarily steps in front of a bullet for the Chaplain but he is the eyes and ears protecting the Chaplain when they go out on missions. He shoots when the Chaplain needs to be protected. They also perform a lot of the same duties, such as counseling, but do not give any of the sermons/ messages.

I feel that if you go through the training and have a heart to be in the military, you should do it. I am glad that there is an opportunity for religion to be added because help in any form always helps.

For clarification: The chaplain assistant is in no way a bodyguard, but rather an assistant, lest the name. I know of no chaplain assistant who would step in front of a bullet or a bomb for the sake of the chaplain living. How could someone ask that of anyone?
