Mount Pleasant residents will notice more changes to Mission Street in the coming months.
The Mount Pleasant Planning Commission Thursday approved a site plan to the Hot ‘N’ Now restaurant, 1501 S. Mission St.
The proposed changes will construct a 50-square-foot addition to the building’s current cold storage facilities located on the southeast corner of the building.
“For what we are proposing to do here, we just need a little more space,” said Hot ‘N’ Now Owner Kirk Mosher.
Mosher is working on re-branding the building to become an Oh-My Burgers & Fries drive-through restaurant.
Jeff Gray, director of planning and community development, said the property is within the city’s access management regulations, but there is some concern that with the additions, traffic coming from Fairfield Drive to Mission Street would create problems for vehicles using the drive-through at the restaurant.
“You have cars that are just accelerating there and it has been requested that the drive be moved,” Gray said.
Mosher said he is open to working with the Planning Commission in order to resolve any concerns they have with the additions to the building. He does not believe the current location of the driveway is going to cause any problems.
“I have owned this place for 20 years and there has never been an accident coming out of there,” he said.
Tim Brockman, a Planning Commission member and owner of Max and Emily’s Bakery Cafe, 125 E Broadway St., said he believes any problems can be worked out.
“If the staff feels that the driveway is becoming a danger than we can work with the applicant,” Brockman said.
The Planning Commission proposed that Mosher move the driveway farther east to avoid congestion and the chance for accidents. Mosher has looked at the issue and is guessing it will cost him $30,000 to move the driveway in question.
“It’s tough to get money right now,” Mosher said. “I am trying to scrape money together to get this done as it is.”
