‘Yell like hell’ bringing spirit for CMU Tuesday
“Yell Like Hell” encourages students to cheer on CMU, their registered student organization and the Homecoming theme.
About 30 groups will yell for points toward the Maroon Cup and the Golden Goblet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Finch Fieldhouse Room 110.
The contest, a three-minute cheerleading-type routine without stunts, will be judged based on energy, creativity and spirit.
Essexville senior Katie Johnson is the competition co-coordinator of the “Yell Like Hell” event.
“It’s what all of Homecoming Week is about — spirit,” she said.
With all the groups involved, there may be up to 300 students there, from all groups of campus life, Johnson said.
“Any RSO can participate in Homecoming week,” Johnson said. “We have a diverse range — Greeks on campus, (On The Fly Productions), hall councils are really big in it.”
Barnes Hall, the winners of last year’s “Yell Like Hell,” won with a Magic School Bus-themed cheer.
“We never go in to win, we go in to have fun,” said Alpena sophomore Nick Stepaniak. “If winning happens, it happens — it’s not our main goal.”
Practice started for the group Thursday evening.
Warren junior Johnna Valls is choreographing this year’s routine for Barnes Hall. Stepaniak, a Barnes Hall resident last year, is helping Valls.
“It’s a great way to get the hall together and get to know people. It’s a great way to get pumped up for Homecoming,” Stepaniak said.
Barnes Hall’s theme for 2009 is “The Game of Life: The Adventure Continues,” and it is excited for the chance to compete.
“It’s a definite sense of pride that Barnes Hall carries that I haven’t experienced in another hall that I’ve lived in on campus,” Valls said.
“Yell Like Hell” is a new Homecoming event. The contest first appeared as a mystery event several years ago.
“It was well received, and then we just kept it as our own tradition,” Johnson said.
