CMU football team extends winning streak against Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — CMU Senior defensive end Larry Knight made the most out of the extra snaps he was given with defensive ends Sam Williams and Kashawn Fraser sidelined.
In CMU’s 24-10 win against Bowling Green today at Doyt Perry Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio, Knight had two sacks, one that swayed the field-position game in CMU’s favor.
With a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter, Knight sacked BGSU quarterback Tyler Sheehan on the Falcons’ 1-yard line.
“It was all Josh Gordy,” Knight said. “That was the option (Sheehan) wanted to throw to, and Gordy was on him, so he didn’t have anywhere to go.”
Two plays later, BGSU punted inside its 5-yard line, and it gave CMU starting field position at the opposition’s 35-yard line. Five plays later, senior quarterback Dan LeFevour found senior wide receiver Bryan Anderson in the end zone to give CMU a 14-point lead.
The elements played a factor in the strategy of the game, said CMU coach Butch Jones. There was a heavy eastward wind in Bowling Green that affected the passing game.
“I thought the elements were a major factor in the game,” he said. “We knew we had to establish the run game.”
LeFevour, who completed 16-of-22 passes for 147 yards, was more effective in the running game. He finished with 128 rushing yards. Junior Carl Volny replaced sophomore Bryan Schroeder in the first half as CMU’s feature back.
Volny finished with 74 yards on 11 carries.
“I can’t say enough about Carl Volny,” Jones said. “He’s been waiting his turn and he got it today and he made the most of it.”
Despite finishing with 363 offensive yards, the Falcons were 1-of-5 inside the redzone with no touchdowns, including two turnovers inside the 20-yard line.
“We did a great job of coming up with the plays we needed to,” Jones said. “Those are scoring-territory takeaways.”
Junior wide receiver Antonio Brown finished with 68 receiving yards and a touchdown to go along with 42 rushing yards and a touchdown.
CMU had a total of 259 rushing yards in the game.
Sheehan completed 35-of-55 passes for 341 yards and a touchdown. BGSU Senior wide receiver Freddie Barnes finished with 14 catches, 172 yards and a touchdown.
CMU linebacker Nick Bellore led the team in tackles with 13. Sophomore defensive tackle John Williams added a sack and senior cornerback Josh Gordy had an interception.
