Education and Human Services Building evacuated at 1:30 p.m. today

The Education and Human Services building was evacuated at about 1:30 p.m. today in suspicion of a gas leak.

The fire alarm was pulled on the second floor and the police along with the fire department were dispatched.

Students said they smelled gas and were complaining of slight headaches.

“I couldn’t smell anything because I have a cold,” said Hyun Kyung You, a human environmental studies professor, whose class had pulled the fire alarm. “But my students smelled something.”

The HDF 212: The Family in Cultural Perspective class, was the class that had first smelled gas.

“We were in class and smelled gas and told our teacher,” said Muskegon junior Jessica Hellman. “Some of us in the back were getting headaches.”

The teacher called down to maintenance and was then told to pull the fire alarm and evacuate, said Southfield senior Elizabeth Taylor.

“There was a smell of gas and they pulled the fire alarm as a precaution,” said CMU Police Officer Tim Prout. “The system was then reset.”

CMU Police allowed people back in the building about a half an hour after police and the fire department checked the building.
