CMU to play Troy in GMAC Bowl on Jan. 6

The CMU football team will play a bowl game outside Detroit for the first time in more than a decade.

The Mid-American Conference Champions will face the Sun Belt Conference Champion Troy Trojans (9-3 overall, 8-0 Sun Belt) at 8 p.m. Jan. 6 in the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

The game will be televised on ESPN.

It is No. 25 CMU’s fourth consecutive bowl-bound season after playing the last three at Ford Field in Detroit for the Motor City Bowl. The last out-of-state bowl game for Central was at the Las Vegas Bowl in 1994, where CMU lost to UNLV 52-24.

“We’re excited to represent Central Michigan University and the Mid-American Conference in the GMAC Bowl and would like to thank the GMAC Bowl for inviting us to compete in their great event,” said coach Butch Jones. “It’s another opportunity for our university and our football program to be in the national spotlight. I’m excited for our 13 seniors who will be participating in their fourth consecutive bowl game and have one more opportunity to represent the ‘C’ of Central Michigan.”

Troy, from Troy, Ala., also went undefeated in its conference, losing to the MAC’s Bowling Green (31-14) and the Southeastern Conference’s No. 5 Florida (56-6) and Arkansas (56-20).

The Trojans rank third in the Football Bowl Subdivision in total offense with 478.5 yards per game and fourth in passing offense with 331 yards per game.

Their quarterback, Levi Brown, has thrown for 3,828 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions this season.

Troy’s defense, however, ranks 100th out of 120 FBS teams, giving up 417.9 yards per game. It gives up 277.8 passing yards per game, 117th in the nation.

Senior quarterback Dan LeFevour said the team is excited to play in a fourth consecutive bowl game.

“This is something that’s never been done at CMU, so I think that is pretty impressive,” he said. “For our senior class, it’s another opportunity to spend some time together and play football. We know this is the last time that we’ll get that opportunity together.”

Ohio and Marshall will play in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl on Dec. 26 at Ford Field in Detroit. It is the first year since 2005 the bowl game, formerly named the Motor City Bowl, will not feature CMU.

    Also to the Troy fans that like to visit our newspaper website. Do you guys even have one down there?? Because I got on your university website actually interested in the school and found the Tropolitan, that was last updated on October 8th, 2009. Seems pretty old for such a big a popular school that you guys seem to call yourselves.

    It’s funny how all of you “football fans” keep referring to the south as and I quote “A hell hole” yet Alabama is the number one team in the nation right now. We may not have all the things that some states up north have but we sure know how to play some football! Ignorance seems to run rapid with you people. It also is going to be hilarious when y’all (AND YES I SAID YALL.. I ALSO HAVING RUNNING WATER AND ELECTRICITY WAAAYY DOWN HERE IN OLE ALABAMA) have to go all the way back….well I really have no idea where you are from or have ever heard of the Chips, with your heads hung because you talked so much smack about having to play a team less than you deserved but got your butts handed to you just like others have. Troy is often talked about on ESPN but NEVER have I heard your school. Isn’t that funny??

    OH and Kelly, BTW don’t say that you aren’t dumb and in the same sentence mispell the word quit. Even we country hick southerners have spell check. Also, you can go to the Troy Messenger which is our newspaper and see the class that our school and our fans show. We have not one negative thing to say about your school even though we too were disappointed. So please don’t quote things you know nothing about.

    Kelly, our newspaper is actually quite good here at Troy University, and the majority of students prefer to have the hard copy versus online version. You will find a great deal of informatioin on our sports program at the Troy Messenger which is the local newspaper for the area. I won’t run your team down because I’ve never seen them play, and sorry but I’ve never heard of them. We are very excited about having a bowl game that is closer to our school as we have played in a California bowl game (Silicone Valley Bowl-now defunct), and the last few years in New Orleans, LA, so it is nice to have a bowl game in the state. Also to whoever posted that we have only had a football program since 2001, seriously do some research because that was laughable. For those who do make the trip to the game, have a safe trip and enjoy what our beautiful state has to offer. You will get to experience the wonder of Mardi Gras (and Mobile is the original home of Mardi Gras), as well as some wonderful southern hospitality because TROY has some of the nicest fans you’ll come in contact with.

    I’m sorry if so many Trojan fans got wind of your site and started posting mean comments. I hope that y’all (yes…I said y’all!!) don’t think that everyone in Alabama is like that. I encourage all of you to try to come down and visit our wonderful state. Mobile is a beautiful city and is full of exciting things to do and see: Ft. Morgan, the Mardi Gras parades, concerts, beaches, Mobile Bay, cruise ships, the USS Alabama Battleship, and not even to mention the nightlife!! Many Troy fans are upset because they don’t get to go party in New Orleans, but I personally feel that the GMAC bowl in Mobile will be a great experience for both teams and their fans. Be safe traveling and may the best team win!

    This will be an absolute shoot out with two of the most explosive offenses in the country going at it, not to mention two outstanding quarterbacks. First team to score 50 points may win this one. I think it will be about like the CMU- Purdue Motor City Bowl game. Troy will have a decisive home crowd advantage, but Central has played well on the road, except the Boston College game. Unlike a lot of our Central fans, I KNOW Troy has an outstanding program and this will be a real challenge in a hostile environment. Win or lose, we accomplished two things we have never done at the Division 1 level: win 11 games and crack the top 25. I may not get down there to see it, but I’m sure Mobile would be a GREAT place to watch a bowl game with all the Mardi Gras activities. I hope as many CMU fans can get down there as possible and GO FIRE UP CHIPS.

    It’s one thing to come onto our school newspaper site and trash talk our football program and school, but when you start throwing around names like “chops” and “tostitos” in reference to our nickname, that’s going one step too far. We are the Central Michigan Chippewas, proudly named after the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe that resides in our area. Our school works hard to foster and promote a great relationship with the Chippewa people and for you to come here and disrespect an entire nation like that is deplorable.
    Please feel free to keep your trash-talking comments coming, a little healthy rivalry never hurt anyone. The Chippewas are a top 25 football program…we can take whatever you throw at us. But please keep your disrespectful, ignorant nicknames to yourselves.

    I like how you all say how much ESPN is talking about you, yet I have never seen Troy actually play a game on T.V. We have been on ESPN or ESPN 2, 3 of our last 4 games. So maybe y’all just don’t get cable down there.

    Oh and for everyone who comes on here saying they have never heard of Central Michigan or saying I have never heard of Troy, you don’t know anything about college football. Heres the thing, both the MAC and the Sunbelt are two of the weaker conferences in Division 1. Being unbiased, the Sun Belt is weakest conference in Division 1, with Conference USA and the MAC right in front of them. Troy is a decent team, but I’m sorry their not at the same caliber as Central right now. You may say you have never heard about Central but obviously enough sports writers have in order to make them #25 in the country. I am not cutting Troy down, but you are definitely not as good as many of your fans make you out to be. To say you could play in the SEC is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

    I agree that CMU is ahead of Troy in the race to become the next Boise State but your team having to travel to our neck of the woods and us having 90% of the staduims fans should neutralize the playing feild a bit. It will be a score fest as both teams lack on the defensive side of the ball. For those of you who make the trip and have never visited Alabama, you will enjoy the incredible views of land untapped. Your Chippewa indians can stop and visit our Creek tribe about 50 miles north of Mobile on the way down. Troy fans are very upset that they are not going to get to spend an entire weekend in the Big Easy, thus the frustration is showing in these posts. Please forgive our few idiot and loudmouth fans. We welcome yall to our state and look forward to the chance at beating a top 25 team. Safe travels!!!!!

    I’m not coming on here to talk trash about CMU, just to state a fact. I’ve read a lot of comments stating playing Troy would be a “SNOOZER”, “Troy who?” “To play the Trojans is a slap in the face”, etc. Let’s just clear the air on one thing. CMU lost to FAU last year in the Motor City Bowl (FAU 24 CMU 21)….close game. Last year we played FAU and won: Troy 30, FAU 17
    This year we played FAU and the score was as follows: Troy 47 FAU 21. NOT SO CLOSE! So, please before stating ignorant comments such as “This is a ridiculous matchup” do a little research people!! May the best team win!!!

    wow..as a Troy graduate im almost ashamed of SOME of these comments..football rivalry is a healthy thing but some have taken it too far..both teams are good and whoever wins shuold be very proud of themselves wether it be troy or the chippewas. i havent seen them go to our papers and trash takl Troy. and theres no need for southern debaucles. the southerners and northerners are jsut as smart as the other. its football. its a bowlgame. enjoy it. dont make it this UNfun thing…Congrats to WHOMEVER wins this game as it will be well deserved.

    because SOMEONE has to be the bigger person. College students should be old enough to not be a bully. its a football GAME. not the end of the world. my teams playing texas but am i going to their websites and smacktalking? no, im to old for it and it makes you look ignorant.theyre proud of their team like we are, whats wrong with that? and i too graduated from troy but i went for education, the football program is secondary to that for me. I had a GREAT education from there but will i lose sleep if they lose? doubt it. its a game, not a life altering experience, and like isaid ill br proud for whoever wins.

That is blasphemy! At least it is in the South and I’m pretty sure they feel the same way up North. This is serious business.     One more thing… As a TROY student, I would like to say that we do have a very good football program, but at the same time we are fortunate enough to be playing a team in the top 25. This does mean that we are going to play in a more recognized bowl game this year, and we should respect that. Lets save the side-chatter for game day especially on the opposing school’s forum.. it might be a little embarrassing if fans on either side **** talk and they end up losing…

    Lets welcome CMU respectfully to Alabama, and lets play as hard as we can!

    This is a CMU site…it is for ALL CMU students to post their feelings. I don’t know where you are getting the idea that none of your precious Troy students haven’t been talking trash on this site. Clearly you didn’t read ANY comments that all the trojans fans left. They have been bashing left and right on OUR site. We have kept our bashing to ourselves so let it be. Also today is the day of the internet wouldn’t some of your alums like to be updated with what is going on with their alma mater?? That is primararily the whole point of a web newspaper. Im sorry y’all havent gotten with the times. Stop trash talking my team and my school that I am proud to come from. If you had a football team since before 2001 that is great I never said anything about that. I am excited for the game and I’m not one of the fans saying “oh yeah we are going to crush the trojans” I do believe it’s going to be an intense game and I’m looking forward to watching it on ESPN whatever the outcome is. Yes we are a Top 25 ranked team and the team has worked hard for the ranking so give us a little credit on that. Trojan fans have also stated that they also have a native american tribe close to them…50 miles away..we have one less than 5 miles. So stop calling it cow chips because last time I checked no one had made fun of being called the Trojans. Good luck to your team.

    No one school was good and the other was mediocre. That was proven. You guys came in talking all this smack and now that you got spanked you guys want to start this ‘Good game’ crap. Here’s the reality, you guys shouldn’t have even been on the field with us and that was proven. Even with our defense sleeping on everything (how could you blame them, they deserved better) you guys were getting assaulted so bad by Dan and the boys that you should have called Law and Order SVU and reported that rape.
    We should have had a better name and a better program out there against us.

    lulz…read my earlier comments..i am not part of the ‘we’ talking smack..I was being nice about it but apparently you cant be. it went into double OT. both teams were evenly matched. there was no spanking or did you not watch the same game? I said id be happy for whomever won…apaprently you missed that though right?..
