Report: CMU will not name a head coach until after GMAC Bowl

ESPN’s Graham Watson reported today that CMU Athletic Director Dave Heeke will not name a new head football coach until after the team’s bowl game.

Former coach Butch Jones, in his third year with the Chippewas, accepting the head coaching vacancy at Cincinnati earlier this month. The team named associate head coach Steve Stripling the interim for the GMAC Bowl against Troy on Jan. 6 in Mobile, Ala.

“In this time of panicked coaching changes across the country, we want to provide our student-athletes with stability and certainty,” Heeke said in a statement. “Our focus is on providing our student-athletes and fans with a terrific bowl experience. We have hired a highly respected interim head coach in Steve Stripling and we are committed to the outstanding staff we have in place.”

    LET JONES COACH!

Hey Mr. Heeke. It’s not panick. It’s called being pro-active. The momentum that the Chips built up during the season, that could be a major benefit in the coaching search, is disappearing the way of The Cabin.

I respect this decision as this team definitely deserves this game and to celebrate their accomplishments.

I just hope we do not lose too many recruits without a figure head in place.

Time to move on. Great job, waiting until after the GMAC Bowl.

It is absolutely the right thing to do and Mr. Heeke should be praised for his leadership. The emphasis right now should be on the TEAM and winning the GMAC Bowl. In 06 the TEAM took a back seat to the coaching search. If anyone remembers watching that game the broadcast was basicly a 3 hour infomercial campaign for Quinn to retain the job. Trasition unfortunately has become very common in Div I athletics. Lets not lose sight of what is most important and lets celebrate the extraordiary accomplishments of this outstanding TEAM.

Isn’t this a dead time for recruiting? I thought recruits couldn’t be contacted during the Christmas/New Years break anyways.

If it takes until after the GMAC bowl, so be it. We need to get the correct guy in charge, so I’d rather wait and make sure we get it right.

I agree with Chip of ’99. Other universities fill their coaching vacancies right away to minimize the loss of recruits. I guarantee you both Kelly and Jones have been contacting recruits since the day they got hired. Our recruiting class is probably getting raided as i type.
