Graduation plans need to be redone

email

I am very concerned about CMU’s 2010 May graduation plans this year. The commencement has two major flaws that should concern everyone participating.

First, they are combining what is normally three ceremonies into one large ceremony. All undergraduate and master’s degree students will graduate in one outdoor ceremony at 2 p.m., rain or shine. Who knows if it will be cold, cool, warm, or hot?

My graduation was on a day when it poured, but it didn’t matter because we were indoors. My daughter has to ask her three grandparents to plan to attend an outdoor ceremony. The grandparents have watched all of their grandchildren walk across the stage but, unless this event is moved indoors, it is unlikely they will make the 2.3-hour drive north to see her graduate.

My mom now uses a wheelchair and asking the three of these 80-year-old proud grandparents to sit outside regardless of weather for what could turn out to be a marathon-type three- or four-hour event is pretty much out of the question. I suspect a lot of grandparents may have to miss a very important event in the life of their grandchild.

I have suggested to Interim President Kathy Wilbur that other plans need to be made even if it means renting a site off-campus.

I am concerned that this could turn into a disaster if the weather is anything but perfect, and that is not fair to the students who have worked hard to get to this point and to the families that have sacrificed and supported them.
I believe the university owes the students and their families more than this.

Renting a space off campus? Where do you suggest we rent a space off campus for this many people in Mount Pleasant?

  • J

How about the casino? Then grandma can play bingo afterwards.

  • Amber

Maybe the author meant they would rent a space and break up the graduations again like they have done in the past

  • Tara

I couldn’t agree with you more, John of Sterling Heights. I will be commuting for my graduation this year and am not looking forward to sitting through a long graduation in unpredictable weather. I am thinking I may not even walk, but I think I deserve that honor! CMU please help us out!!

Think of how long the graduations were before when they broke them up into 3 or 4, does anyone really want to sit through a 9 hour graduation ceremony? The Soaring Eagle has a ton of space that can be rented, and then no one has to worry about sitting outside. My sister is graduating in May, and I would like to support her as she supported me when I got my degree from CMU.

    YA THINK.

Casino? Way to expensive, think about all of the parking to deal with and tickets. I will not want to have it at the Casino anyways, haven’t we given them enough of our money. I would want to graduate on CMU land. Lets just pray that there is nice weather. People you need to think of the positives and stop being negative. Automatically we are thinking, ahh bad weather and long hours of siting. It could be a great sunny day, and those long hours yea it sucks but just like Tara said, you are being honored because you accomplished a hard task and should be proud. For those who complain and are being negative, this is the only option that CMU has. You are not forced to go, you have a choice. Let’s just hope the negative neds don’t ruin it for the people who do want to attend and don’t care about anything but the honor of graduating.
