Lacrosse plays No. 1 Michigan in Ann Arbor

Michigan’s club lacrosse team has the resume’ to match its No. 1 national ranking.

It starts with its back to back Central Collegiate Lacrosse Association championships, it and it keeps going with its 48 consecutive wins.

The CMU club lacrosse team will try to play the spoiler role when it plays Michigan at 7 p.m. Saturday in Ann Arbor.

CMU (1-4) ) began division play against Michigan State, a team it had never beat, and this weekend’s game against Michigan is the same scenario.

“They’re very similar to Michigan State as far as slowing down their transition game,” said coach Brad Thomas. “If we can get them to play in a half field, we have the best chance against them.”

CMU, with three consecutive losses, looks to get off to a better start. The slow starts have proved to be costly the last two games.

Thomas said getting off to a fast start is very important so the team can show it can play with Michigan. .

“The seniors are the guys you look for to step up in a big game like this,” Thomas said.

Michigan is led by junior attacker Trevor Yealy, who is second in the nation, averaging 4.57 goals per game, having scored 32 goals and one assist in seven games.

Said Thomas: “Be cognizant of where (Yealy) is at all times. He is their crease guy — that’s why he has all those goals — so he doesn’t do much dodging. We are going to look at sliding different ways and try to force other guys to beat us.”

Taking quality shots, performing our sets well and shutting down their attack would be key to ending the streak, said senior defenseman Andrew Tillman.

“It would be an amazing feat to be the team that ends Michigan’s win streak,” he said. “It would be definitely the biggest win in the team’s history.
