Board of Trustees meeting will focus on tuition, parking issues

Undergraduate tuition is the main part of the agenda for Thursday’s Board of Trustees meeting.

Steve Smith, director of public relations, said there are many variables he is sure the trustees will discuss about tuition, including the declining number of students covered by the CMU Promise.

“That’s a discussion the Board of Trustees will have to have,” he said.

The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in the Presidential Conference Room.

Eastern Michigan University announced they would not raise tuition or room and board in April. Michigan State University originally had a 4.9 percent tuition raise planned for students this fall but reduced it to only 2.5 percent. The University of Michigan raised tuition 1.5 percent for undergraduates, the lowest increase for the university in 26 years.

Smith said he was sure how other universities were raising tuition will be taken into consideration by Trustees.

“I’m sure they will have a serious discussion about this in the next day or two,” Smith said.

Also scheduled to come up at the board meeting is changes to some of the roadways.

Several stop signs and yield signs are set to be added to parking lots and service drives across campus.

    How about parking garages?

Nooo!! I finally have my financial aid all figured out, don't raise tuition :(

  • CMUstudent

Are you kidding eliza? OF COURSE they are going to raise tuition… everything is in their favor. I don't understand why people come to CMU complaining about tuition, there are 13 public universities in Michigan with MUCH lower tuition rates.

  • eliza

Yes, I realize this but let's not forget that there has been an increase of 57.7% over the past five years, that's ridiculous.

Sadly, for some of us- Central is close to home and one of our only options financially; so when room rate increases force some out of the dorms, along comes a hike in tuition.

Let's not forget that the CMU promise is the reason tuition is still so high for the students not covered by the promise. I was part of the last class to receive the promise, paying $304/cr, while the class before mine pays around $250. In order for them to be able to offer the promise, they had to anticipate tuition hikes and throw them at the newest class. If the promise had never existed, our tuition rates would be comparable to other Michigan public universities.

Also, what does room rates forcing people out of the dorms have to do with a tuition hike? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm sincerely curious.

What I meant was room rates were hiked; and some of us couldn't afford it so we backed out of our rooms hoping to save money there. But now with the tuition increase, a lot of what is saved there is going right back to the university in terms of tuition.
I was sincerely looking forward to living on campus as I wasn't able to my freshman year due to other circumstances.
