BLOG: Ghiaciuc signs with Patriots; Zombo injured during Packers camp

Former Central Michigan football standout Eric Ghiaciuc has been given another opportunity in the National Football League.

Ghiaciuc, a 6-foot-4, 303-pound offensive lineman, signed with the New England Patriots on Wednesday. The Patriots are the fifth team to sign Ghiaciuc since he joined the NFL.

Selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft, he played for the Bengals for four seasons, starting in 42 games. Ghiaciuc signed with the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2008 season but was waived on Sept. 4, 2009.

He later signed with the San Diego Chargers, but did not see any playing time during the 2009 season, having since bounced around between the NFL and Florida Tuskers of the United Football League.

Ghiaciuc played at CMU from 2002-04 and started at center in the final 35 games he played.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Thursday former CMU linebacker Frank Zombo suffered an ankle injury in practice.

“LB Frank Zombo limped off in the morning with an ankle injury and didn’t return at night,” the report said.

Zombo did not participate in the Packers’ Family Night scrimmage at Lambeau Field on Saturday. He is one of 10 linebackers currently on the active roster.

After going undrafted in this year’s NFL Draft, Zombo signed with the Packers as a free agent on April 24.
