Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder to speak in Park Library Wednesday

email

Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder is set to be on campus today to speak and answer students’ questions regarding Michigan’s future economic outlook.

The self-proclaimed “tough nerd” will hold a town hall-style meeting in the Charles V. Park Library Auditorium from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

A representative for Snyder’s campaign said the main focus of the event will be the economy and creating jobs, but Snyder will also discuss his plans to keep students in Michigan after graduation.

Battle Creek senior Travis Faber, first vice chairman of College Republicans, said about 30 students from the group plan to attend the event.

“I want to hear more about Rick’s plan for Michigan- — how he’s going to create jobs and get Michigan back to work,” Faber said. “Most of us are going to college to get a job, so that’s something that interests students.”

Snyder has sent campaign representatives to several of their campus events over the last year to talk about the election, Faber said.

“The Snyder campaign has been really supportive of the College Republicans annd we’ve volunteered for his campaign in the past … he’s really supportive of college students in general,” he said. “We’re helping him out with his campaign in any way we can, helping to spread his good ideas and get his message out.”

College Democrats president and Clinton Township senior Brad O’Donnell was critical of the upcoming visit.

“I don’t know what he’ll be discussing, but I doubt he’ll talk about how he shipped 20,000 jobs to China,” O’Donnell said. “I would like to hear him talk about that, though.”

The event is not sponsored by College Republicans or any other registered student organization. The university did not ask Snyder to speak but accepted his request to do so in the library, said Steve Smith, director of public relations.

Questions to O'Donnell and the College Democrats.
    1. What documentation do you have that he personally shipped 20,000 jobs to China?
    2. Why do students and faculty and union members at CMU and throughout Michigan and throughout the nation buy computers from Dell, HP and Gateway's competitors, who shipped thousands of jobs overseas years ago? Why not ban any company that has telemarketers, computer manufacturing jobs overseas? The Democrats and Bernero are talking out of two sides of their mouth. Let's say Snyder is guilty of doing this. Why didn't union members, college faculty and students buy from American-made Gateway which cost more because they kept the jobs here?
    3. Does Virg Bernaro, the city of Lansing, the state under liberal Jennifer Granholm, CMU, MSU, any state-supported institutions, K-12, any public or private sector organization that employees union members or Democrat voters….buy products from Dell, HP, fly on United Airlines that employs telemarketers in India and the Phillipines. Does Bernaro, the city of Lansing do any business with any businesses that has shipped jobs overseas?

So Brad, let's hear Bernero and the Dems talk about this. If I were Snyder, I'd bring this up now until election day. The Dems are doing a lot of business with companies that have shipped jobs overseas. In fact, don't most college campuses have a Dell store?

A lot of Ford products are made in Mexico. Does the city of Lansing, the state, CMU, ban the purchase of Ford products? Would CMU and the other universities turn down financial contributions from Ford, United Airlines, Dell, HP and all corporations who have outsourced jobs to other countries? Of course not, they're money hungry. Has Bernaro banned United Airlines from Capitol City Airport in Lansing? Would CMU, MSU, and all universities statewide ban Ford, United, Dell, HP and other corporations who have shipped jobs overseas from recruiting college seniors and interns?

So, with all these hypocritical Virge Bernero, the Democrats, liberals, socialists, marxists statewide pick on Mr. Snyder. Yet, they'll be the first to do business with a corporation that has outsourced jobs outside of the USA.

And, besides, who over the past two decades has heavily recruited countries like India and the Phillipines for students?????? Michigan's universities. Bring the Indian and Phillipino students here, educate them, Americanize them and then they return home to open up telemarketing and manufacturing companies and solliciting American corporations. Of course, the Democrats never talk about this. They only want to pick on poor Mr. Snyder……….and again, where's the evidence he personally authorized shipping jobs. If George Ross or the CMU Board makes a decision that some administrators, professors had nothing to do with….then you can't blame them. The same should apply to Mr. Snyder.

All politicians need to be taken to task for their records. It is the business of all concerned voters to do so. Don't deflect from your chosen candidate just because you happen to vote along his party line.

So CrasEdit, the media should visit the Lansing and Southfield city halls and see if those two cities are buying products from companies who have outsourced jobs. Also, visit state offices, public universities, K-12 public since they're under Democrat Granholm and investigate.

Again, let's see the evidence on Snyder. But, let's also investigate Bernero's record of purchasing products and ask him if he's shutting down the Dell stores on state properties, if elected.

Is he paying for the venue? In the past CMU has given these venues to Democrats like Granholm to speak for free. Is Snyder being given the same courtesy?

I have not personally bumped into Virg supporters and I live amongst democrats.

At least Snyder has published his 10-point plan for bringing Michigan back out of the wasteland created by Democrats in power. Bernero's plan seems to be more about giving our tax dollars to the unions. IMHO that would be worse than the current Democrat administration.

Absolutely, if you have that fear, demand it of your candidates. Did anything I say not suggest that that should be the case? Let me clarify: I have as much a problem with Democrats attempting to deflect heat from Bernero as I do the opposite (ridiculous cow costume or not), but I, like many, don't need people who already have their political biases neatly laid out telling me how to vote or that I shouldn't be focusing my scrutiny on their chosen candidate. I can respect that you are backing Snyder, but if you aren't still keeping one eye open on him at all times you aren't doing your job as a voter. If there's one thing this year's political climate is telling us, it's that we won't get fooled again, and I'm not going to vote Republican simply because a Democrat in office did a terrible job. I'll take the person with the best IDEAS, thanks.

Snyder has his faults, as he showed in his speech on Wednesday (I was there), but if he can lay out a better plan than Bernero, he has my vote. I am however sick of hearing from close-minded folk that because someone is either liberal or conservative they are somehow less American than someone of the opposite belief. It's a false construct to set people apart like that, and if there was one thing Snyder said that made the most sense, it was that we are all in the same boat and in need of a solution. He also managed to say words that were synonyms of “Hope” and “Change,” but kind of danced around them. I guess they are things Republicans simply don't say nowadays, but so long as we all alluding to it, all the better.

Anyways, back to my (and Snyder's) point: people are people and labels are labels and your brand of politics can still be vastly different than those of someone that agrees with your policies. So long as Michigan wins in the end, that's all that matters to me.
