Mannino sets MAC shutout record in CMU win at Miami
Senior goalkeeper Shay Mannino set a Mid-American Conference record for shutouts Friday as the Central Michigan women’s soccer team got its third consecutive conference win.
Mannino recorded the 30th shutout of her career as CMU beat Miami 2-0 in Oxford, Ohio, improving to 3-0 in MAC play.
“It’s a good feeling to know we’ve shutout so many teams and we play so well defensively,” Mannino said. “It’s a good honor as a team.”
Eight minutes into the game, senior midfielder Jenna Hill scored on an assist from sophomore midfielder Bailey Brandon to put the Chippewas up 1-0.
Later in the first half, sophomore forward Charlese McLemore dribbled through the Miami defense and scored from the box to extend the lead to 2-0. Freshman Nicole Samuel recorded an assist on McLemore’s goal.
“Today, we played a good team on the road and we did a really good job,” said CMU head coach Tom Anagnost.
CMU outshot the Redhawks 12-6 and took the lead into the half.
Both teams went scoreless in the second half as Mannino broke the tie with Northern Illinois goalkeeper Lindsey Curnock to earn the MAC record in shutouts and receive the win.
Anagnost emphasized how consistent Mannino has been in goal during her time at CMU.
“She did what she was supposed to do today,” he said. “She made the saves she needed to save and the plays she needed to make.”
With Hill and McLemore’s goals, the Chippewas now have ten goal scorers on the season.
CMU (6-3-1, 3-0 MAC) shut out the MAC’s leading offense and snapped its four-game winless road streak in the process.
“I think winning this game here shows a lot,” Mannino said. “We have to come out hard every single game because nobody is going to hand us wins.”
Jess Kodiak had a team-high three shots for Miami (9-3-0, 2-1 MAC).
CMU looks to extend its three-game winning streak at 1 p.m. Sunday against Bowling Green.
