Union Township, Mount Pleasant reach waste water treatment agreement

Union Township will be able to use Mount Pleasant’s waste water treatment services, partnering to make a more efficient use of both parties’ facilities.

The two-page agreement was unanimously approved at Monday’s City Commission meeting. City Manager Kathie Grinzinger said the township’s sewage capacity was close to being reached, while Mount Pleasant’s sewage had excess room.

The plan allows Union Township to divert flow to the city since the two infrastructures run close together.

Vice Mayor Bruce Kilmer called the plan an “excellent achievement.” Mayor Jim Holton said everyone involved will benefit.

“In the end,” Holton said, “taxpayers will win.”

As an example, Holton said, the connection of wastewater treatment services has been successful from the city of Detroit to Pontiac.

The commission eliminated a sentence from Section 71.02, Parking Regulations of the Code of Ordinances. The ordinance prohibited back-in parking to metered spaces, which conflicts with the new requirement for back-in angle parking on Bellows Street .

Commissioner Kathy Ling is still concerned about the effectiveness of signs designating the requirement on Bellows. Although the signs have already been changed once, she said certain areas are not well marked and she sees people continuing to park normally.

“I would hate to see people getting caught if the sign is difficult to see,” Ling said.
