Volunteers stuff safe sex kits, patrol bars
Sixty Safer Sex Patrol volunteers equipped with condoms, tape, Now & Laters and information sheets crowded the Down Under Food Court Thursday to spread sexual health awareness.
The condom kits contain a condom wrapped inside an information sheet containing tips on proper condom usage. It also contains contact resources for sexual heath on campus.
Volunteers used tape to attach the information sheet to the condom.
“Basically our agenda is to reduce the number of STDs and STIs in the community and on college campus,” said Grant senior and student coordinator Carly Davidson.
Davidson said this method will allow people to realize that SSP is a legitimate organization.
In previous years, the message on Dum Dum Pops was offensive for some, so Davidson offered a solution for the abstinence kits. This year they used Now & Laters with stickers placed on them, stating “the decisions you make now will affect you later,” along with “Know the facts: abstinence is 100% effective.”
The kit stuffing was in preparation for bar patrols that will be taking place Nov. 4th. Patrols also take place in residence halls and tailgates.
“I like their message and what they stand for, but I don’t really feel comfortable going to the bars and I still want to help,” said Birch Run sophomore Apryl Scheffler. “That’s why I do the kit stuffing.”
Davidson said students can sign up once to volunteer if they choose, or as many times as they want. Some volunteers were new to kit stuffing, but Davidson said many people on the sign-up list have volunteered many times.
The volunteer session was scheduled from 8 to 9 p.m., but within 30 minutes volunteers were finished and exited the Down Under Food Court.
“It didn’t take long at all, nice quick and easy,” said Livonia freshman Charles Crockatt.
