CMU women’s basketball earns WNIT bid, plays Illinois State

The Central Michigan women’s basketball team has earned its third postseason bid in program history.

The Chippewas (20-10) will play Illinois State (20-10) in the first round of the WNIT on Thursday in Normal, Ill. Tip-off is set for 8:05 p.m.

Illinois State finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference, and earned the conference’s automatic bid to the WNIT. The Redbirds have played in the WNIT the past three seasons.

Illinois State holds a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams. CMU’s lone win came in the team’s last meeting, a 72-62 win on Nov. 25, 2001.

The winner will play in the second round against the winner of Wisconsin and Butler.

CMU last made it to the postseason when it earned bids to the NCAA tournament in 1983 and 1984.
