‘Sucker Punch’ not unbearable, leaves audience dizzied, confused

2 stars out of 5

“Sucker Punch” is not as bad as many people will undoubtedly claim, but it is still utter nonsense.

There are plenty of reasons to not be a fan of Director Zack Snyder’s latest, but the most glaring one is the writing. After a rather solid dialogue-free opening sequence, the audience is pummeled with one of the most overly descriptive exchanges possible.

This happens far too many times to be forgivable. If  an audience member cannot pay enough attention to not need characters to remind the main character she’s an orphan then that person should probably stop watching movies. This type of writing is just insulting.

Although the acting is pretty bad, it is hard to tell if it is due to the actors or the ridiculous dialogue. The story attempts to be deep and somewhat self-reflective but just comes off as convoluted and confused.

Snyder is getting far worse reviews than he deserves, though. This film is visually impressive and Snyder proves yet again that he is the master of CGI-heavy action cinema; just like “300″ and “Watchmen,” “Sucker Punch” is a beautiful film.

There are comparisons out there to such massive let downs as “Southland Tales” and “Showgirls.” This is not the truth, though, and actually is insulting to them. Those films are massive attempts at becoming the defining examples of certain genres and ratings.

This movie is just what happens when a director is given a little too much freedom and does not stop to understand that overly-fetishized girls and crazy gun-and-swordplay do not add up to equal a watchable movie.

The one thing to take away from this movie is that Zack Snyder should never be allowed to come up with an original film again.

Worst review every. So one sided. You fail to realize the director’s targeted audience. Gamers, Comic die hards, Otakus, e.g

This is like incorporating everything Otakus and Gamers can imagine into one big bundle of goodness. Watch this and keep an open mind that YOU aren’t the targeted audience.

    Unless you’re a pervert.

I love video games, CGI, and all things illustrated. I couldn’t get past the over-strung-out dialogue in this film. I am the target audience. Snyder’s aim is a bit off.

I have always considered myself an avid fan of both comics and video games (added bonus: I am also an admitted pervert) but I have to say that Suckerpunch is simply poorly written to the point that I can’t even bring myself to enjoy the visuals.
