Isabella County man accused of murdering wife ordered to stand trial

An earlier version of this story listed Gary John Reen’s next court date without specifying it is not part of the proceedings for the murder trial.

Gary John Reen, who confessed to killing his wife April 1 in the barn outside their Mount Pleasant home, was ordered to stand trial after a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Judge William Rush oversaw the Isabella County Trial Court hearing for Reen, 56, of Chippewa Township, who is charged with the murder of his wife, Cheryl Kristine Reen, 51, after turning himself in to the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department.

Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick said Reen’s examination started at 9 a.m. and lasted about 45 minutes. During that time, three witnesses were called to testify and evidence was presented.

“We don’t have to put out all the evidence, we just have to put out enough evidence to convince the judge that there’s probable cause and a crime occurred,” Burdick said.
